The Discipleship Training School (DTS) is a core initiative within YWAM. It is a six-month long program, the purpose of which is to equip and prepare students to understand their own identity in Christ, as well as what God’s purpose is for their lives. Available in almost every part of the world, the DTS combines classroom-based lectures with practical outreach and enables personal reflection, community living and small group activities to create a holistic combination of theory and practice. Please take a moment to pray for YWAM’s DTSes right now and please also pray with us on November 10, our prayer day for YWAM’s prayer initiative called The Invitation.

1. Please pray regarding the lingering effects of COVID-19 – Many have lost loved ones in the pandemic, please pray that they would be comforted and feel God’s peace in this difficult time. Please also pray for wisdom for those in DTS leadership to be able to navigate the various and ongoing COVID developments, so that we may act wisely and with care and diligence (Psalm 119:76).
2. Please pray for the DTS in Ternopil Ukraine – Please pray for YWAM staff and DTS students in Ternopil, Ukraine. On October 9th and 11th it was reported that there were explosions in Ternopil which resulted in casualties and death. Please pray for God’s protection and for hope to abound not just at our DTS location in Ternopil, but in the entire city and indeed the entire nation.
3. Please pray for the God’s Story DTS – In 2018, in order to make the DTS more accessible for many unreached communities around the world (an estimate of 80 percent of those communities are oral learners and communicators), an oral version of the DTS was introduced. The God’s Story DTS (GSDTS) has a focus on discussions of biblical narratives as well as discursive Bible studies. The first GSDTS took place in Salatiga Indonesia in August of 2019, and by 2021 there were GSDTS locations in Malawi, Mexico, and three more in Indonesia. Today, five more schools are planned in Indonesia, as well as in Ivory Coast, Panama, Florida and Michigan. Please pray a prayer of thanks for the growth of this school as well as a prayer of guidance for the extended plans for the God’s Story DTS (Proverbs 19:21).
4. Please pray for our DTS students around the world – We are living through interesting times and discipleship is just as important as it has ever been, perhaps even more so. As such, please pray that our current DTS students will continually encounter God on their respective DTS programs, and will learn the true meaning of discipleship in order to be apprentices of Jesus. Please also pray for a greater awareness of Discipleship Training Schools among young people who could benefit from them.

It has been estimated that there are over 1000 deaths attributed to the cyclone so far, with some estimating that it could reach into the tens of thousands dead. Around 1.7 million people are affected across South East Africa, with 100,000 people needing urgent rescue near the city of Beira. There is no running water or electricity in much of the area, and many homes have been swept away and roads destroyed by floods. Over 400,000 Mozambicans are estimated to now be homeless.

There are reports of cholera in the area, and there is risk of other outbreaks, including malaria, which is already increasing.

Two Youth With A Mission centres have been affected by this natural disaster. Thankfully no YWAM staff or students have reportedly lost their lives, but they are trying to recover from the shock of the disaster. Both locations have had the majority of their buildings severely damaged.

YWAM Beira runs a home for 29 boys and young men and a community school for over 600 students. Classrooms, dorms and other facilities have all been damaged.

YWAM Dondo runs a preschool for 68 children, a laboratory to diagnose malaria and a HIV patient care program and pastors seminars and much more. The classrooms, accommodation, laboratory, and clinic have all been damaged.

There are also many people in the communities around the Youth With a Mission locations that are in desperate need of help.

Youth With A Mission is engaging in a unified response to this crisis. YWAM has linked up with RescueNet and Mercy Air to ensure that they are giving the best response possible. Mercy Air has already done a flyover assessment and RescueNet Europe is on their way to provide some of the necessary assistance.

To allow for a swift and coordinated flow of resources YWAM Southern Africa has set-up a dedicated office managed by John Sulter and Dave Peter at YWAM Muizenberg, South Africa. The office will manage donations and communications for people wanting to donate to help, and for people or teams who may wish to volunteer in the rebuilding effort.

The situation in Mozambique is very serious. We ask that you would please be generous towards our brothers and sisters in Christ in Mozambique. They are in desperate need of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies.

The Norwegian people of 4,8 mil woke up to a national tragedy this morning. After the bomb explosion in Oslo centre yesterday, it became evident that more than 80 young people also had been shot to death at a political youth camp, by a 32 year old Norwegian – probably the same person who made and released the bomb.

The government buildings, including the office of the prime minister, look like a battlefield. How could one extreme nationalist do this alone? There are many questions.

As believers we ask ourselves what to say to non-believing victims and their families. The horror at the island, where the youths were killed, was a hell-experience. 500 young people were running for their lives as the gun-man was executing them. Some escaped jumping into the sea, but even there they were shot at.

No YWAM’ers were killed or wounded yesterday, but as Norwegians we all feel the loss and the pain. Personally I have two children living in Oslo center, they were both safe. Our son is working close to the bomb center, but he was not at the office yesterday. We have lot to thank God for!

Please pray for YWAM Norway; that our staff, and the entire body of Christ, will be anointed to point at Jesus in the days of sorrow and grief.

In rural Papua New Guinea one in seven women die in childbirth! Yep, that’s right, 1 in 7 women die in childbirth! That’s a shocking statistic to say the least. To give birth to a child a mother has a 15% chance of dying, can you imagine?

A friend of mine, Adriel Booker, in Australia works with YWAM Ships, a ministry that is currently working on delivering medical help into Papua New Guinea. She is a Mom, blogger and fellow YWAMer who has a strong passion for helping other mothers in need. To help expectant mothers in Papua New Guinea she has started a program called Bloggers for Birth Kits to help reduce maternal mortality in rural Papua New Guinea.

The way to help is so simple that anyone can do it…

For as little as a $2.00 donation you can purchase a Birth Kit. The Birth Kit is very simple, but according to the Birthing Kit Foundation can greatly help to reduce the incidence of infant and maternal mortality and morbidity. The kit includes:

• 1 plastic sheet to provide a clean birthing surface
• 1 bar of soap for clean hands during the birthing process and to clean the umbilical stump
• 1 pair of plastic gloves for clean hands
• 1 sterile scalpel blade to cut the umbilical cord
• 3 cords / pieces of strong string to tie the umbilical chord
• 5 gauze squares to clean the baby and mother

The kit is simple, yet effective. Adriel made up her own (which you can watch on the video at the bottom of this post), but I think the most effective way for us to help is to donate.

Youth With A Mission Oxford sent out an e-mail update about what’s happening there and the YWAM Centre’s response to the crisis.Here is the e-mail:

Dear Friends and Family,

Thanks everyone for all your prayers and concerns.

As most of you have heard we are all doing fine here in Oxford. We definitely felt the earthquake, but no harm was done.

My main thoughts and prayers are for the city of Christchurch and just how we are to continue to respond as these events unfold. Last night we were able to send three vans in to Hagley Park where 100’s were displaced and without proper shelter in the rain. We brought 18 people back and were able to provide food, shelter and showers for the night. Today 9 of them have gone back into Christchurch in an attempt to resume their travel plans. The rest will stay here for another night and resume their plans tomorrow.

On another note, this weekend is our start date for our largest semester of the year. We have 55 students scheduled to come in this weekend to start our courses on Sunday. Domestic flights are running and international flights are scheduled to resume this afternoon, but will probably experience some delays.

Noah and Kate are doing fine at our City Ministry house in Christchurch, although the house sustained some damage.

Prayer Points

– How we as a community can best serve and respond as these events unfold

– That our network and communication lines will remain open

– Quick recovery of Christchurch city

– Comfort for those experiencing great loss, fear and trauma

– That our students would not be detoured from attending our courses

– That there would be minimal setbacks for the running of our schools (ie. possible delay of food supply and fuel as the immediate need is focused on the city.)

Thankfully there was no one injured in the collapse.

YWAM Medicine Hat has been renting the building and was in final negotiations for the purchase of the property. The ramifications for the collapse of the roof is not yet known, but they would appreciate a lot of prayer right now about the situation.

They believe that this place is to be a missions base with prayer and missions going hand in hand. The ministry at Youth Wtih A Mission in Medicine Hat has been growing and they have seen a number of ministries growing and being birthed in the last number of years.

Until they know more they are not sure what will be happening. They are looking at possibly needing to find and rent a new facility. They would greatly appreciate your prayer and wisdom into the situation.
